This is true of polyethylene because it is a linear plastic (i.e. not crosslinked). if you have a kayak that is thermoformed out of a plastic like abs (which is crosslinked), then it requires a totally different repair procedure, and melting it together won't work.. Using epoxy with plastic should be avoided. it doesn't stick to the plastic and if get it to attach mechanically ( say moulding it in) it'll flex and expand in a different way to plastic causing it to leak. when you go to properly repair the hole you'll have a load of gunk epoxy and will have to cut out a section much larger than the original hole..
