Making A Kayak Skirt

Learning how to make a homemade kayak sprayskirt can be basic knowledge for a kayaking enthusiast. spray skirts ensure that water does not enter the cockpit of your kayak and assists in preventing the boat from accumulating water.. Spray skirts are made from either waterproof nylon or neoprene, depending on the primary regions paddled in. making your own spray skirt allows for a custom fit around your body and around the kayak combing. the process requires basic sewing skills and the ability to envision a pattern on a blank piece of fabric.. Two basic types of kayak spray skirts come in a myriad of designs. the white water, "water proof" neoprene skirts are made for heavy-duty kayaking. lighter duty nylon spray skirts keep you fairly warm and dry, but aren't meant for the white water, surfing or an "eskimo roll." the first is more.

Attaching a spray skirt to a kayak can be a chore that beginners and even more experienced paddlers wrestle with under the wrong conditions. once the paddler has put on their spray skirt and is sitting in the kayak with the rear of the skirt attached, the hard work begins. they must pull and attach the remainder of the skirt.. Make a conical mandrel as shown for the upper skirt "tower." i used a piece of thin aluminum sheet joined with duct tape. the upper circumference should be approximately 4" less than your waist size, the bottom length about 2" longer. my tower is 11" tall, but i paddle c-1 and sit about 6" higher than in a kayak..
